What is a Micro-Internship?
Micro-Internships are short-term, flexible, professional opportunities for students to engage in the workforce through on-site, virtual, or hybrid placements. At Lake-Sumter State College, a micro-internship is:
1. a work-based experience that is embedded in an academic course.
2. between 10-40 hours in length and hours are typically flexible and self-paced.
3. on-site, hybrid, or remote. Most micro-internships are remote.
4. project-based, meaning there is a distinct beginning and ending date that correlates with the project being completed.
5. non-paid, with Parker-Dewey internships being the exception.
6. registered in LSSC Career Central for documentation purposes.
7. include a certificate of completion and badge at the successful conclusion of the internship.

What are the benefits of a Micro-Internship?
•The student intern receives valuable work-related experience that can be useful for any future employment.
•The student interns can “try out” a micro-internship in a particular field of interest to determine if this is a career pathway they want for future employment.
•The micro-internship can help fine-tune a student intern’s competencies by reinforcing soft skills, particularly communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
•Micro-internships may be easier to complete and therefore increase access for more students.
•It is not always necessary to wait until the end of a student’s program of study to complete a micro-internship.

Examples of Micro-Internships
a. Job Simulations with national and global companies.
b. Customized micro-internships at the college/community level.
